What is anime rap?
It is a subgenre of nerdcore focused on anime series and characters. A rapper takes a character’s story, powers and personality and writes the track from that point of view. Dragon Ball fits well because its fights and transformations are easy to turn into rhymes.
The most popular format is the cypher: several rappers trade verses, each one playing a character. Rustage has released many, with artists such as Daddyphatsnaps, GameboyJones and NLJ.
Is the official Dragon Ball music rap?
No. The original Dragon Ball Z opening, «Cha-La Head-Cha-La», is sung by Hironobu Kageyama and is a Japanese pop and rock track. All Dragon Ball rap comes from fans and independent artists.
How to make your own Dragon Ball rap
- Pick a character. It is easier to write as Vegeta or Goku than to sum up the whole series.
- Find an epic beat. Dark trap beats with orchestral sounds or a lot of tension work well.
- Write from their story. Use their attacks, rivals and defeats as material for your rhymes.
- Mind the rights. Use a licensed beat and avoid audio from the show if you plan to monetize.
